What It’s Like To Intern at Falvey

17/06/2020

Falvey Insurance Group has built a successful internship program that’s based on truly making our interns part of the team. We gain their help and insight, while interns get some real-world experience to help them further their careers. Learn more about our intern program by hearing what present and past interns themselves have to say:

What did/do you hope to gain during your internship at Falvey?

“I’ve had some experience marketing for consumer-facing products, but I’m excited to learn about B2B marketing with a trusted, innovative brand like Falvey.”-Alden Newman, Summer 2020 Marketing Intern, University of Maryland, Marketing and Psychology Double Major (Junior)

“I hoped to learn about the common legal issues in a marine insurance firm and contract formation.”-Elizabeth Hyland, Spring 2020 Legal & Operations Intern, Roger Williams University School of Law, Juris Doctor (2020)

“ I hoped to gain experience in Maritime/Insurance Law industry and In-House Counsel perspective on outside counsel activities.”-James Bass, 2018 Legal & Operations Intern, Roger Williams University School of Law, Juris Doctor (2018)

“I hoped to gain what all young lawyers seek: experience. Particularly because I wanted to work in the specialized field of marine insurance, I needed as much experience as I could get my hands on. Given Falvey’s great reputation, I knew an internship with Falvey would have tremendous payoffs. The internship has DEFINITIVELY paid off for me.”-Logan Pearce, Spring 2017 Legal & Operations Intern, Roger Williams University School of Law, Juris Doctor (2017)

“I learned the process of how a general counsel advises and oversees the operations and claims teams. I also learned how a general counsel for a marine insurer selects and works with outside counsel to litigate issues regarding claim disputes.”-Joseph B. Staph,  Falvey Cargo Legal & Operations Intern, Northern Arizona University, Bachelor of Arts in History (2014)  & Roger Williams University School of Law, Juris Doctor (2019)

“I gained a hands-on education in marine insurance. Primarily this included reviewing specific claims, declinations, policy provisions, policy interpretations, etc., and applying my knowledge of the law to real-world scenarios.”-Brody Karn, Fall 2018 Legal & Operations Intern, Roger Williams University School of Law, Juris Doctor (2019)

“What I most wanted to learn at Falvey was what it was actually like to be an accountant day to day, versus just learning about it from a textbook.”-Andrew Carmone, Accounting Intern Winter 2017, Rhode Island College, Masters of Science in Accounting (2017)

“I interned at Falvey to gain professional connections and insight into an office environment.”-Jill Fury, Marketing & Operations Intern 2016-2018, Loyola University Maryland, Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Spanish (2020)

“During my internship at Falvey, I hoped to gain foundational knowledge on admiralty law, specifically the areas of marine insurance and salvage.”-Genevieve Fidler, Fall 2019 Legal & Operations Intern, Clarkson University, Bachelor of Science in Political Science & Energy Policy (2017) & Roger Williams University Law School, Juris Doctor (2020)

What is different from interning at Falvey than at other companies?

“Falvey is different because of the strong sense of community. The employees have been so welcoming, and the company engages in so many fun activities and competitions to build relationships.”-Alden Newman

“I actually revised and worked on contracts, which I have never done before in other internships. I would just do legal research or draft memos in other internships, but Falvey trusted me with contracts for clients and real-time legal issues that I found very interesting.”-Elizabeth Hyland

“Falvey is basically a family and the entire company was very approachable and welcoming, all in a world class facility (with a great commute).”-James Bass

“I interned at several other companies and organizations, but none can hold a candle to Falvey. At the other companies, I was just a body used to complete meaningless tasks. I learned very little. As an intern at Falvey, I was thrust into a significant position within the organization and expected to be a viable member of the team. It was a little daunting at first, but I would have it no other way (neither would Falvey).

In addition, there were individuals within the Falvey organization that took an actual interest in my education, which I personally believe is invaluable. When you have people who are willing to set aside time from their schedule to make sure you are learning and growing as a professional, your experience becomes even more worthwhile. I had many great internships as a law student, but, again, none come close to the months I spent as a legal intern at Falvey.”-Logan Pearce

“Interning gave me the unique experience of working in the marine insurance industry from a legal perspective. Falvey also offered a different experience than other internships because I got the opportunity to work seamlessly between multiple departments, such as coordinating between the operations and legal teams.”-Joseph B. Staph

“Falvey is one big family. I was amazed at the employees’ willingness to help their coworkers at every level. It is altogether fitting that Falvey deals in marine insurance, because the office feels like being on a well-crewed vessel. Everyone seems to work harder toward the company’s purpose because of this overarching unity.”-Brody Karn

“What separated interning at Falvey from other companies is that even though you are an intern, you are treated with the same respect as all their employees.”-Andrew Carmone

“Falvey values community and wants to make sure all employees feel happy, welcomed, and comfortable. Everyone in the office is really friendly and I enjoyed working across various departments!”-Jill Fury

“Compared to other internships I’ve had in the past, you could tell that everyone at Falvey was family. It was always easy to find someone to eat lunch and become friends with.”-Genevieve Fidler

What is something you didn’t expect to learn or gain from your internship with Falvey?

“I did not expect that I would also get the opportunity to work with the Frontline Foods Rhode Island chapter. This has been a very exciting surprise! I’m looking forward to supporting Frontline Foods’ mission of providing meals to frontline healthcare workers.”-Alden Newman

“I didn’t expect to be utilized in so many different ways at Falvey and to get feedback on the projects I worked on. I gained a lot of confidence from my experience at Falvey. When I received feedback that Jack, the COO, was impressed with my work, I really felt like I made a difference for the company. Also, being trusted with so many projects made me feel very respected and it boosted my confidence in the workplace. My time at Falvey is an experience I will take with me going into my legal career.”-Elizabeth Hyland

“I was actually exposed to the business development side much more than I expected to be and enjoyed working with the Operations team on potential future initiatives of the company. I also learned more about the London Insurance Market and Lloyd’s, which I now use in practice at a firm which services several Lloyd’s accounts.”-James Bass

“One thing I did not expect to gain from my internship with Falvey was learning to work with individuals who are not lawyers. It may sound a bit silly, but law students have “law school blinders” on and only see and understand what has been drilled into their heads (contracts, rules against perpetuities, hearsay, etc.). No one teaches law students how to collaborate with human resources, IT, finance, marketing, and the like, so a corporation can be very foreign to a law student.

“Falvey is a great place where a young lawyer can really define themselves in the corporate setting because the environment is so collaborative. Each team makes it a point to work together toward the same overall objective. As an intern at Falvey, you quickly realize how you can use your legal training to help counsel other departments. The lesson I did not expect to learn was the most important lesson I walked away with.”-Logan Pearce

“I did not expect to experience the fun, family-like environment that Falvey Insurance Group had to offer.”-Joseph B. Staph

“I did not expect to work as extensively as I did with the operations department and this is what I enjoyed most during my internship. It was not simply writing legal memos or advising the legal department on nuanced points of law. Rather, it was taking those nuanced points and translating them into language that coworkers on the business side could appreciate.

I would recommend my experience at Falvey to any student of maritime law. I felt as though I had an advantage on day one at my current firm.”-Brody Karn

“At Falvey, I gained valuable marketing skills that will help me with my future career! I also made some great friends.”-Jill Fury

“I did not expect to learn so much about the global marine insurance scheme. I was lucky enough to have Jack Falvey and Dan Sules as personal tutors teaching me the ins and outs of marine insurance, and humor every question I could think of.”-Genevieve Fidler
