A form of liability insurance for vessel owners that covers third-party risks such as bodily injury, pollution, and cargo damage as well as coverage for Crew members under the Jones Act. Think of it as the marine version of auto liability insurance and Workers Comp for Crew.

Additional limits above primary policies.

Excess coverage that sits over P&I, MGL, and employer’s liability. It acts like an umbrella policy, offering broader protection against large losses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Specialty Marine insurance and how does it work?

Specialty Marine coverage is a customized insurance solution designed for hard-to-place marine risks that don’t always fit into traditional marine policies. Marine terminal operators, ship repair yards, marine contractors, and waterfront businesses face some of the most complex risk profiles in the insurance landscape. Their operations often involve overlapping liability, environmental exposure, vessel damage, and cargo risk. Specialty marine insurance consolidates multiple marine exposures under one policy, one underwriting team, and one renewal, helping brokers eliminate coverage fragmentation while maintaining flexibility.

What is the core problem or gap this policy addresses?

Specialty marine is less about replacing traditional coverage and more about complementing and enhancing it where necessary. It is designed for clients with overlapping, high-severity marine exposures, or could be used as standalone coverages.
