Each year, Falvey sends rising star team members to the Lloyd’s Broker Academy. Mark Coppa from the Marine Cargo team, and Maureen Connelly from the Inland Marine team, were selected to attend the 2023 academy. They will spend October 15-20 in London with some of the best and brightest in the industry. Here’s what they had to say about her experience:
What were your thoughts on being selected for the academy?
Maureen: I am honored and grateful to have been selected to attend the Lloyds Broker Academy this year. It was an incredibly rewarding experience.
Mark: I felt honored and excited when I was selected for the Lloyds broker academy after hearing so many great things from other employees that have attended.
What were some key takeaways from your experience?
Maureen: I’m grateful to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Lloyd’s and be immersed in the marketplace for a full week. I learned so much from being able to shadow both a Broker and Underwriter at Lloyd’s.
Mark: Some of the most memorable moments were the broker and underwriting shadowing. Watching as a risk was walked around the underwriting floor and seeing wet stamps go down live was an incredible experience. On the other side of the table sitting in the box with an underwriter gave me a new outlook on underwriting risks face to face and the importance of relationships to the Lloyds marketplace.
How will your academy experience change your day-to-day role going forward?
Maureen: This will benefit my day-to-day underwriting role, in any situation where I am working with Lloyd’s or representing Lloyd’s in understanding the marketing and underwriting mechanisms involved. Seeing the marketplace in action and being a part of the many workshops helped demystify Lloyds and how it all works. The networking and relationships that I built are invaluable and will last a lifetime.
Mark: I will bring many of these experiences back to my day-to-day role. Most importantly the value of building strong relationships with our broker partners and clients. The overall experience was once in a lifetime and the connections I made at the Academy will be irreplaceable.
