In this week’s team spotlight, you’ll meet Julie Hencler. She has not only been a leader in our accounting department for well over a decade, but is also a craft beer fanatic and canine chef.

Julie has worked at Falvey for nearly 15 years and has held virtually every title in an accounting department: staff accountant, senior accountant, assistant controller, and now controller. She takes pride in the fact that, at some point or another, she’s been responsible for every task her team members are asked to perform.

As controller, Julie manages four accountants who are responsible for all the day-to-day activities within Falvey’s accounting department. This includes invoicing, payables, receivables, collections, expense reporting, and budget management. Her team is also responsible for bordereaux reporting on over 25 different cover notes to at least a dozen different securities, as well as financial statement preparation for Falvey Insurance Group and its subsidiaries. As technologies have improved, requirements and expectations have increased exponentially and Julie notes that she’s continually impressed by the accountants and volume of work they complete at an exceptional level.

“I remember driving home from my first couple of days at Falvey and thinking it was the first time I ever felt truly challenged at work,” Julie says. “I think that’s why this company thrives—Falvey pushes people to be their best and never accept the status quo. This cultivates an environment where people know they can count on one another. Nothing sums that up better than when you hear Mike, our CEO, tell someone they did a great job and they turn around and name two co-workers that got them there. At Falvey it’s not ‘Look what I did,’ it’s ‘Look what we accomplished together.’”

Julie started her full-time professional career as a customer service representative at Citizens Bank, while also attending Rhode Island College full time. After graduating with her accounting degree, she worked for one year in the accounting department for Citizens Bank before joining Falvey as a staff accountant.

Outside of work, Julie loves entertaining and cooking for her family and friends (and dog). Yes, she confesses she cooks special meals for her 3-year-old Boxer, Arya; it started as a way to help Arya put on weight as a puppy, but now Julie just likes spoiling her. Julie also enjoys weekend escapes to her family’s cabin in South Ryegate, Vermont. As a craft beer lover, Julie is known for making road trips to Vermont and New Hampshire to try a new brewery or restock some of her favorite beers.
